Map Location

St Mary Magdalene Church is a prominent Grade I listed church located in the market town of South Molton, North Devon. This impressive Perpendicular Gothic style church has been a central part of the community for centuries, known for its stunning architecture, rich history, and role in local heritage.

History and Architecture

The church that stands today is the third built on this historic site. The earliest recorded church dates back to the late Saxon or early Norman period, with mentions in the Domesday Book of 1086. The current building was largely constructed in the 15th century, replacing earlier structures to accommodate the growing population of South Molton. It features a Perpendicular Gothic style typical of medieval English church architecture  .

Throughout its history, St Mary Magdalene Church has undergone various restorations, notably in 1829 and 1865, when the church was re-roofed, reseated, and enlarged. During these restorations, clerestory windows were added, allowing natural light to flood the interior, and the building was adorned with Victorian stained glass windows .

The embattled western tower, once topped with a spire that was damaged by lightning in 1751, remains a striking feature, housing a clock and a peal of eight bells. The church interior includes a finely carved stone pulpit and piscinae from its medieval heritage .

Notable Features

The church is also known for its Green Man carvings, symbols of fertility and rebirth, with foliage emerging from the figures, a blend of pagan and Christian symbolism. These carvings, dating from the 15th century, are a unique attraction within the church, offering a fascinating glimpse into medieval beliefs .

The churchyard holds historical significance as well, with connections to local legends and events such as the 1655 Royalist rebellion, where a Royalist leader reportedly leapt over the churchyard wall on horseback to escape from Cromwell’s troops .
